The Boardman boys track team qualified several athletes to the 2013 Regional Championship at the District Meet at Austintown May 24. The Spartans finished second overall, behind Fitch. Warren Harding was third and Howland finished fourth.
Senior Nathan Jones was the district champion in the 100-meter dash and also finished fifth in the 200-meter dash. Jones is also a member of the Boardman 4x100 meter relay team that placed first, along with junior Ivan Adu-Poku, junior Turel Thompson and junior Brian Bodrick.
Adu-Poku, Bodrick, junior Darius Sanders and freshman Brendon Lucas earned a regional spot by finishing third in the 4x200 relay.
Junior Mark Hadley earned a regional spot in both the 1600 and 3200 by placing first in both. Hadley along with junior Alan Burns, junior Jacob Kelleck, and junior Justin Maroni earned a regional berth with a third place finish in the 4x800 relay.
Freshman Nathan Hadley earned a regional spot and set a new BHS freshman record in the 800 with a 2:01.98 finish to take fourth in that race.
Junior Steve Brown is the final regional qualifier with his third place finish in the pole vault.
These athletes will need to finish in the top four places of their events to advance to the 2013 State Championship Meet in Columbus.
Other Spartans that scored in the district meet were senior Will Birchfield (fifth place) and junior Jeff Bean (seventh place) in the 110 hurdles. Bean was seventh in the high jump while senior Chris Riwniak was seventh in the shot put. Burns was fifth in the 3200 and Maroni was fifth in the 1600. Jones and Bodrick finished fifth and seventh in the 200. Lucas was seventh in the 400 and was also seventh in the 4x400 with sophomore Josh Suarez, junior Nick Cordova and Kelleck.
