One dead, one wounded in East Side shooting

YOUNGSTOWN — A 20-year-old man is dead and an 18-year-old man is recovering from a gunshot wound to his head in a shooting on the city’s East Side.

James Merchant, 18, told police that he and Keil’n Thurston, the 20-year-old murder victim, were on the 700 block of Kendis Circle at ESA Park Apartments to retrieve Thurston’s cell phone about 9:40 p.m. Thursday when they heard multiple gunshots.

Officers found Thurston in the back seat of a van with a gunshot wound while Merchant was inside 720 Kendis Circle, according to a police report.

Merchant told police he didn’t know from where the shots were fired, but realized he was shot in the head. The bullet was removed from Merchant’s head after he was taken to the St. Elizabeth Health Center’s emergency room, according to a police report.

Thurston died while on his way to St. Elizabeth, the report states.
