The Boardman boys track team captured the fourth Federal League championship May 17 by finishing first at the League Championship meet at Lake High School.
The Spartans opened the meet by placing third with a season best and national qualifying time of 8:07 in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of juniors Mark Hadley, Alan Burns, Jacob Kelleck and Justin Maroni. In the next event, the 110-meter hurdles, senior Will Birchfield placed first in a time of 15.04 seconds and junior Jeff Bean was fifth in a time of 15.99 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Spartan senior Nathan Jones placed first and set a new BHS record with a time of 10.61 seconds as well as earning the BW3 ‘Track MVP of the Week’.
“Both Will and Gator (Nathan) set the tone for our team,” explained Phillips, “after their wins the guys believed they could win the meet.”
In the 1600-meter run, Hadley placed first with a time of 4:24; he was followed by Burns in second at 4:31. The Spartans were third in the 4x200 meter relay with the team of juniors Ivan Adu-Poku, Darius Sanders, Brian Bodrick, and freshman Brendon Lucas in a season best and national qualifying time of 1:31.00. Lucas finished fourth in the 400-meter with a national qualifying time of 52.72 seconds and junior Nick Cordova placed eighth at 53.56. The 4x100 meter relay team of Jones, Bodrick, Adu-Poku and junior Turel Thompson finished second in a season best and national qualifying time of 42.68.
“In order for us to win we had to get great performances from a lot of guys,” said Phillips, “looking at all the season best and national qualifying times it looks like the team rose to the occasion.”
In the 300-meter hurdles, Birchfield finished seventh in 42.28 seconds. In the 200-meter dash, Jones took second in 22.31 seconds and Bodrick was third at 22.50, while Hadley placed first in the 3200-meter run at 9:28 and Maroni was fourth at 9:57. In the 800-meter run, Burns was sixth overall with a time of 2:04. he Spartan 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Josh Suarez, Lucas, Kelleck and Cordova took fifth in a time of 3:30.
In the field events, senior Chris Riwniak was fourth in the discus with a throw of 137 feet and 3 inches. In the high jump, Bean finished eighth with a leap of 5 feet and 8 inches. While in the pole vault junior Steve Brown took fifth with a vault of 13 feet.
