Party on the Plaza returns
By GUY D’ASTOLFO
The first Party on the Plaza of the season will be Friday, even though the bar that throws the bash — Warehouse 50 — isn’t open yet.
Party on the Plaza is the annual outdoor series that begins right after the end of the work week. Taking place on a half-dozen Fridays during the summer months, it features live music and a fun atmosphere on the large, outdoor sidewalk plaza in front of the Stambaugh Building on Central Square, downtown.
The owners of Warehouse 50 are renovating the bar, which used to be Dooney’s Downtown Grill, and before that, Buffalo Wild Wings.
The new owners took over the space a couple months ago and have completely gutted the room. When finished, Warehouse 50 will feature large doors that open to create an indoor-outdoor atmosphere.
Scott Austalosh, entertainment director for the new bar, said the opening date will be announced soon.
The bar management decided to not only continue the Party on the Plaza tradition, but add to it.
To inject fresh life into the events, the party — and the music — will get started much earlier. An acoustic set by Dennis Drummond will begin at 5 p.m., and the full Dennis Drummond Trio will take the stage at 8 p.m.
The headliner, national blues artist Anthony Gomes, will start at 9 p.m.
A DJ will entertain during the breaks between bands.
Another big change will be in the food department. Food trucks will be on hand, offering barbecue, sandwiches, bacon-wrapped hot dogs, prime rib and Cuban sandwiches and other specialty items. Beer and liquor will be available for purchase, and Austalosh promises there will be easier access to the bar areas that will be set up in the festival area.
As always, admission will be free, and all ages are welcome.
Ryan Reese, owner of Warehouse 50, is looking forward to the party and the opening of the new bar, which he said will adhere to Youngstown traditions.
“It’s an honor to serve the great people of this community with an establishment that will bring everyone together to embrace the values of what this city stands for.”
Future Party on the Plazas will be June 21, July 5, July 19, Aug. 16 and Aug. 30. Bands will include the Hern Brothers Band, The Rage, The HouseBand, Fetish and more.
