Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley is offering comprehensive testing for children with lung disorders with the opening of the new pediatric-only pulmonary function lab.

Located in the Boardman Medical Pavilion, the lab offers complete pulmonary function testing to assist with the diagnosis and management of lung disease, such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, in children and teens. Akron Children’s Hospital’s campus in Akron and the hospital’s services at the Boardman Medical Pavilion are currently the only two pediatric-only pulmonary function labs in a 23-county primary service area.

Projects at Salem Community Hospital

SALEM

The following projects are ongoing at Salem Community Hospital. A few weeks ago, its first patient received a 3T Open MRI using the hospital’s new scanner. It is the only 3T scanner between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. The “T” stands for “Tesla,” which is the unit of measurement used to determine the strength of the magnet used. The stronger the magnet, the quicker and clearer the images produced by the scanner. All other area scanners are 1.5T.

The hospital also is implementing a new way to register and identify patients called Patient Secure. It will be the first hospital in the state to introduce this computerized system that uses palm vein biometric technology to scan the palm and create a unique patient identifier that is linked to the patient’s medical record.

Work also continues on the patient bed tower that is scheduled for completion in January 2014.

Events at University of Pittsburgh

On Wednesday there will be a CPR certification course at the Shenango Valley campus from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (call 724-589-6113 to register) and free bone-density heel screenings from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Womancare Center in Hermitage (call 724-347-7700 for an appointment).

On Thursday the wellness center in Greenville will have a silver and fit event at 1 p.m.; call 724-588-3001 for more information.
