Cup skipper tries stand up paddleboarding

Always up for a challenge, America’s Cup champion Jimmy Spithill will trade the thrill of speeding across the waves of San Francisco Bay aboard his high-performance catamaran for the hard work of paddling from one Hawaiian island to another.

It’ll be just Spithill and his board — and 32 miles of open water — in the Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard World Championships on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Australian definitely will have to downshift from the catamaran, which can sail faster than 50 mph, to paddling at 4 to 5 mph.

Spithill jokes that he won’t have the help of the big grinders who turn the winches on the America’s Cup boats but is eager to push himself.

Tyson Gay tested positive at US nationals

Sprinter Tyson Gay failed more than one drug test this year, recording one of his positives at the U.S. championships in June, where he won the 100 and 200 meters, The Associated Press learned on Friday.

Earlier this month, Gay revealed he had tested positive in an out-of-competition test he took May 16.

Three people familiar with the case told the AP that Gay had multiple positives this year. One of those people said one positive came at nationals and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has notified him of that result.

Martino inks contract as Barca’s new coach

Barcelona announces Argentine coach Gerardo Martin will take over for Tito Vilanova, who stepped down last week to proceed with a cancer treatment.

The 50-year-old Martino, who has never coached in Europe before, signed a two-year deal.

Martino said that he would tweak the team he has inherited, looking to improve on something that was already working well.

Martino will travel later Friday to Oslo, Norway, where Barcelona is getting ready to play a friendly against Valerenga today. The Spanish league begins Aug. 17-18.
