Scrappers, Yankees split DH

Staff report

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers pounced on Staten Island Yankees starter Rookie Davis, scoring three times in the first inning.

Those runs helped the Scrappers win 7-3 and salvage a split of Sunday’s doubleheader. In the first game, three Yankees pitchers combined to throw a seven-inning shutout in a 3-0 win.

Saturday’s Scrappers-Yankees game was rained out, prompting the need for two seven-inning contests on Sunday.

In the second game, Claudio Bautista’s one-out double in the first fram was followed by hits by Juan Herrera, Nellie Rodriguez and James Roberts. Robel Garcia’s sacrifice fly scored Rodriguez for a 3-0 lead.

The Scrappers (11-23) scored twice in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fifth inning, Herrera doubled and Rodriguez homered for a 7-0 lead.

Robert Whitenack (2-4) picked up the win, tossing five shutout innings.

The Yankees (16-15) tagged reliever Rafael Homblert for three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The opening game was scoreless until the Yankees scored three runs in the fourth inning. Bubba Jones’ two-run double followed an error and a walk. Caleb Hamrick (1-5) took the loss, allowing one earned run in four innings on the mound.
