Xavier University cuts jobs to fill budget gap

Published: Wed, July 17, 2013 @ 2:55 p.m.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Xavier University in Cincinnati has cut 51 jobs as part of a $5 million cost-cutting effort to balance its budget.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Jesuit Catholic school notified employees on Monday that 31 people were laid off and 20 vacant jobs eliminated.

No professors were laid off. The school has an overall workforce of nearly 1,000 employees.

The school says students’ need for more financial aid was among reasons for the budget strains. The school says student retention has been below forecasts, and there have also been shortfalls in graduate enrollment.

The school is also cutting spending on back-office services.
