Man unfurls Confederate flag at Ohio school board meeting

Published: Tue, July 16, 2013 @ 3:10 p.m.

SPRINGBORO, Ohio (AP) — A southwest Ohio man who unfurled a Confederate battle flag at a school board meeting says he was trying to make a point about history. Others say his move was offensive.

Sonny Thomas insists his message was misinterpreted, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported. He showed the flag at a recent Springboro board of education meeting in response to the board’s backing off an earlier plan to offer a constitutional class with a religious theme. He says the flag means heritage to many people in the South and that he meant to educate and inform.

“People automatically skewed it to being racist,” Thomas said.

The Rev. Damon Lynch Jr. of Cincinnati, a civil-rights leader, said Thomas’ use of the flag without considering its racial overtones shows his ignorance.

“The flag represents slavery, and he needs to inquire a little more into what the flag has meant,” Lynch said.

Kelly Kohls, president of the Springboro school board and a Warren County tea party leader, said she was surprised by Thomas’ actions and comments at the meeting last week.

“I didn’t get his message, if he had one in there,” she said, adding that the board couldn’t restrict public comments in meetings.

So what if he belonged to the Tea Party. Every Political Movement has it's share of marginal people (mentally impaired or deranged). I wish I had a Buck for every member of the Democratic (sic) Party that belonged to the Klan. I would be a Rich Man!

Also, I'd like to know how many Southern Democrats during Jim Crow (a program they started) participated in the Lynching of Black People. And yet, Blacks vote overwhelmingly for the Party that persecuted them all those years. What is that all about?

The Dems haven't changed- they're still racists. And the Republicans haven't changed either- they're still the Pro-business, Progressive Party they always were.

Republicans support Free Enterprise (for everybody who can do the job) and that benefits us all.

The Steel Industry in the Mahoning Valley- and the Industry we now have- was largely started by Entrepreneurs who were Republicans.

Also, Southern Blacks (were they were routinely tormented and occasionally Lynched by Southern Democrats) flocked North to work in places like Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown in industries run by Republican Entrepreneurs who treated them equally- only qualification was: Could They Do the Job. And, Guess what, in all those places who opposed the newcomers as threats- the Organized Democrats.

So, not much has changed, the Wolf is wearing Sheep's Clothing- that's all.
