Community Band in joint concert at Maag pavilion

Staff report

The Youngstown Area Community Concert Band will host its fifth annual “Music in the Park with Friends” concert next Sunday at Maag Amphitheater in Boardman Park.

The free concert will begin at 2 p.m. and will feature special guest band the Jeannette (Pa.) Community Band.

The concert series began as a result of a friendship between members of the YACCB and the Somerset (Pa.) Community Band. The Somerset band had commissioned a piece from Ohio native James Swearingen as a tribute to Flight 93, which was hijacked by terrorists in the Sept. 11 attacks and crashed in Somerset County, Pa., and the YACCB invited the Somerset Band to come to Youngstown for a joint concert.

That same year, it was decided that the joint concert would become an annual event, with a guest band from Ohio or Pennsylvania, said Joseph Pellegrini, director of the YACCB. Past bands in the series include the Kettering Civic Band, the Ashtabula Brass Band and the Western Reserve Community Band from Hudson.

The July 21 concert will include the YACCB performing for about 45 minutes, and then the Jeannette Band playing about an hour. Both bands will play popular music, with an emphasis on Broadway tunes.

The Jeannette Band will play selections from “Jersey Boys” and “The Wizard of Oz,” while the YACCB will play songs from “Robin Hood,” “Les Miserables” and a musical medley from the 1980s, said Pellegrini.

Future YACCB concerts will include a 7 p.m. show Tuesday at Austintown Township Park.
