New Middletown officer injured in crash is in serious condition

YOUNGSTOWN

The New Middletown officer who crashed his cruiser into a guardrail and two cement barriers on Loveland Road Thursday afternoon is in serious condition, Vince D’Egidio, police chief, said.

Det. Phillip Schaper, 8-year veteran of the department, suffered several facial fractures and a broken arm and is at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center downtown.

Schaper, who is a diabetic, experienced an extreme medical emergency when his blood level dropped, dazing Schaper while he was behind the wheel, D’Egidio said.

Youngstown Police are still investigating the accident. A report will not be available until the investigation is complete.
