Man gets 80 years for rape of young girl

A jury found an Austintown man guilty of eight counts of rape Friday after seven hours of deliberations and he was immediately sentenced to 80 years in prison by Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge John Durkin.

The verdicts were returned against 40-year-old David T. Adams of New Road. He was accused of raping a female who was between 12 and 15 years old from 2007 to 2009.

In 2011, Adams entered an Alford plea, or a plea in which the defendant does not admit guilt but admits that if the case goes to trial there is enough evidence to convict them. He tried to take that plea back but Durkin denied his motion, leading to his collapse Dec. 2, 2011, when he was sentenced to 15 years in prison by Durkin.

A jury was seated to hear the case Monday. They began deliberating Thursday and returned their verdicts about 11:45 a.m. today.
