Local animal rescue organizations host Christmas in July

Four local animal charities will be having a “Christmas in July” themed pet food drive to benefit Mahoning Valley pets and pet owners. The four organizations, A Call Fur Help, For the Dogs Animal Rescue, Northeast Ohio Lab Rescue and West Side Cats, will be collecting food and necessary goods at designated drop-off locations, as well as through an online virtual food drive, throughout the month of July.

The organizations are inviting animal lovers throughout the Valley to be a “summertime Santa Claus for Needy Paws” and make donations of dry and canned dog food and cat food, cat and dog treats, and cat litter. Like other charities, animal organizations receive peak donations during the holiday season and run the leanest in the summer months. Through rekindling the Christmas spirit in the summer heat, the rescues hope to replenish much-needed supplies.

Donations will be accepted at Angels for Animals, (4750 West South Range Road, Canfield), Cobblestone Corner (6234 Market Street, Youngstown), Kerpsack Veterinary Clinic (707 South Meridian Road, Youngstown), Meshel Workshop, Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities (160 Marwood Circle, Boardman), Petco (317 Boardman-Poland Road, Boardman), West Side Cats (2217 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown), and Santa Fe “The Southwestern Caf ” (2626 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown). Santa Fe will also offer a coupon for $1 off for donations dropped at their restaurant.

Donors who are unable to visit these locations can contribute through the Virtual Food Drive. This allows donors to purchase and donate dog or cat food and cat litter online. The Virtual Food Drive is located at http://www.acallfurhelp.org/virtual-food-drive.html.

Proceeds of the drive will be divided equally amongst the four non-profit organizations.

For the Dogs works primarily to find permanent and foster homes for dogs who are at risk for euthanasia at the Mahoning County Dog Pound, providing foster homes as well as veterinary and behavioral support. Northeast Ohio Lab Rescue provides the same rescue, foster, adoption and veterinary services for Labrador Retrievers throughout northeast Ohio. West Side Cats is a no-kill cat shelter operating in Youngstown, and provides rescue, shelter housing, food, litter and veterinary care for cats. A Call Fur Help distributes pet food to impoverished Mahoning Valley pet owners who are having financial difficulties providing for their companion animals, ensuring that the pets remain in the home rather than being surrendered to a shelter.

A Call Fur Help, For the Dogs Animal Rescue, Northeast Ohio Lab Rescue, and West Side Cats are all registered Ohio non-profit organizations. For more information, see their websites at acallfurhelp.org, forthedogs.org, westsidecats.com and http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/oh684.html.
