A former middleweight boxer from Youngstown pleaded not guilty Monday in Mahoning County Court to an assault charge involving an ice-cream-truck operator.

Leonard “Lenny” Villers, 57, of Austintown was accused of striking the ice-cream-truck operator, Joseph Feudale, 61, of Canfield, in the face June 28. The dispute was about Feudale shortchanging Villers’ grandson after he purchased an ice-cream treat on Depauw Avenue in Austintown, according to police.

Feudale told police he was going to give Villers back the $5 his grandson used to buy the ice cream because he did not want to fight over a few dollars. Villers grabbed Feudale by the shirt and caused it to rip, and then repeatedly punched Feudale, according to police.

Feudale had visible facial wounds when police arrived. Villers left the scene and had to be contacted by police.

Villers is a former Golden Gloves champion boxer. According to Vindicator files, he worked with the boxer trainer Edward Sullivan, who also trained Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini. Villers was once featured in The Ring magazine’s “Punch of the Month” for his 1982 win over O’Dell Leonard.

Villers’ pretrial hearing on the assault charge is scheduled for Sept. 16 in Mahoning County Court in Austintown.
