New policy permits some employees to carry guns to Ohio school

New policy permits some employees to carry guns to Ohio school

Associated Press

Some employees of an eastern Ohio school district will be allowed to carry guns on school property under a new policy going into effect in the fall.

The Newcomerstown Exempted Village School District board recently OK’d a policy authorizing certain employees designated by the board and superintendent to carry guns, The Times-Reporter of New Philadelphia reports.

The district released few details of the plan allowing selected employees to carry guns in a designated school-safety zone. Board President Jerry Lahmers says it would be counterproductive if the general public knew how many people were authorized to carry weapons or in which buildings they worked.

Those carrying guns must get tactical training and be recertified by the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Department annually. They also must have a permit to carry a concealed handgun.

“We want to keep our students safe,” Superintendent Jeff Staggs said.

A citizens group had asked that the board to allow guns in the district’s buildings and that school employees be trained and armed. The Parent Safety Committee contended there was a need to “get rid of gun-free zones” such as schools, where no one is armed to combat an attack by an outsider.

Lahmers said the new policy should help keep kids safe.

“I think it would be somewhat of a deterrent,” he said.

The voice of reason!!!

They're doing it just right - the administration and the parent safety committee understand what being prepared means. Too bad more people and districts don't get it.

Yes...great idea. One of these authorized certain employees has a bad night at home, comes in carrying a gun (because they are an authorized certain employee), has an issue with a co-worker who disagrees with them and what do you know....another school shooting. This time in our own back yard. But I guess I will jump on the band wagon. I only hope it is not just some puny hand gun either. I hope it is an all out fully automatic assault rifle.

FormerYtown, you can replace the words 'authorized certain employees' with the word police officer or security guard or any other person who is authorized to carry a weapon for protection or public safety, we all have bad days. However in your world any "authorized certain employee" that is armed and has a bad day turns into a homicidal nut.

The article states that people who will carry in the school will have to undergo training and be recertified by the sheriff. While these folks may not be perfect and have bad days, they will probably also be people who understand and are willing to take on the added responsiblity that comes with having a weapon.

You think you can create a perfect society and all you have to work with is imperfect humans such as ME and YOU.

I'm uncertain about this. One, the last time I checked the Ohio Revised Code only on duty law enforcement officers were permitted to have firearms in a school. It might be best to keep it that way, but that would mean cutting fat out of the budget to fund it and that won't happen.

Yes, knowing that there is armed resistance in a building is generally a good deterrent, if you want to deter reasonable sane people. Mass murders are not reasonable nor sane people. I worry that arming school personnel is just going to up the ante. Columbine was not planned as a shooting. It was intended to be a bombing and the attack was carried out that way. We may just end up with fewer more violent attacks with larger body counts.

Our schools have had armed teachers/administrators for years. They are required to go through security guard training and then rotate the carry responsibilities. This keeps everyone guessing who is carrying. Also, the carriers have been properly trained in the use of their weapons.
