An abandoned baby gorilla has ventured outdoors at the Cincinnati Zoo with her surrogate family for the first time.

The 5-month-old female Western lowland gorilla, Gladys, explored the outside yard starting Friday with her surrogate mother, 30-year-old M’Linzi, and M’Linzi’s daughter, Mara.

Primate Team Leader Ron Evans reported both older gorillas were “purring like crazy.”

Gladys was born Jan. 29 at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville, Texas. After her mother rejected her, she moved in February to Cincinnati.
