Summit County deputy sheriff faces marijuana charge in Youngstown

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

A Summit County deputy sheriff is facing charges of marijuana abuse and failing to display the required front license plate, which city police lodged against him after they stopped the car he was driving Saturday evening at Market Street and Dewey Avenue.

After charging him in the 7:29 p.m. traffic stop, police said they took from Darrell Joy, 41, two small plastic bags of marijuana, a fully-loaded .45-caliber firearm and his Summit County deputy identification and badge.

A city police lieutenant called a Summit County Sheriff’s Office captain, who verified Joy’s status as a deputy, but said Joy had been off work for more than a year due to an injury and asked city police to take Joy’s identification and badge.

Joy is scheduled to be arraigned at 9 a.m. Monday in municipal court.

When they stopped Joy for purportedly failing to display a front license plate, police said they saw a marijuana bag in plain view in Joy’s left breast pocket and that Joy smelled strongly of marijuana. Police said Joy told them he was a law enforcement officer and had snatched the bag “off of some kid.”

When police said they then found a large marijuana bag in Joy’s right front pants pocket, they reported that Joy told them he found both bags on the ground at a function he attended and took them to destroy them so no young people would find them.

Police released Joy after issuing him a summons for the minor misdemeanor license-plate charge and the first-degree misdemeanor marijuana charge.

Maybe he thought he'd just get a ride home if he got caught doing something stupid over here.

Saturday evening at Market and Dewey, a prime target area and time for law enforcement in Ytown.

This fellow apparently didn't know that and fell right into the trap.
