Two men rescue boy at Mosquito

Staff report

An 11-year-old Bazetta Township boy was hospitalized at Akron Children’s Hospital on Thursday after being rescued from the water near Mosquito Creek Dam.

According to Vindicator news partner 21 WFMJ-TV, Dave Ragozine and his grandson were fishing below a spillway in Bazetta when he saw a young boy playing on a submerged bench.

He said he warned the boy, 11-year-old Dallas Shaffer, of the danger and told him if he didn’t come in he would call police.

Ragozine went back to fishing and when he looked up, he saw the boy jump in, according to WFMJ’s report.

Within a few seconds, Ragozine said he could see the boy was in trouble and he reacted.

“That’s when I ran in, jumped in, took my shoes off and hopped in after him,” he said.

Ragozine said another man named Tom Streets of Warren ran into the water right behind him and headed for the boy.

They pulled the boy to the bank.

“He was purple, totally purple and white; there was no movement, no breathing at all,” he said.

Streets’ wife administered CPR before rescue crews took over.

Signs along the spillway warn the current is fast and dangerous.
