2 injured in sparklers-pipe blast near Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a pipe filled with material from sparklers exploded and injured two men in southwest Ohio.

Maj. Daryl Wilson of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office in Dayton says the blast severed a 33-year-old man’s finger and part of another finger. He says the man was scheduled to have surgery to remove shrapnel after the Thursday night explosion.

Wilson says the man’s condition was not immediately available today. A 22-year-old man suffered less serious injuries and was treated and released from a hospital.

Wilson says the men told authorities they put the substance from sparklers inside a pipe and ignited it. The explosion occurred in Jefferson Township near Dayton.

Deputies are investigating, and charges of illegally manufacturing explosives are likely.
