Niles man charged with firing shots at vehicle

Staff report

Police charged Sammie Summerlin Jr., 55 Royal Mall Drive, with felonious assault, failure to comply and discharging a firearm in city limits after answering a shots-fired call at the Royal Mall apartments about 8:55 p.m. Tuesday.

The shooter already was gone when police arrived, reports said. An officer on his way to the call, however, saw a car that matched a description of one the shooter was driving and tried to pull it over on U.S. Route 422, but the driver refused to stop and sped up, reports said.

A man told police at the apartments a person later identified as Summerlin yelled at him to leave and fired several shots into the hood of his car.

Niles police chased Summerlin to Parkman Road and Union Street Southwest in Warren, where he jumped out of the car and ran away. He was caught by Warren police and taken to Trumbull County Jail, where he remains after his arraignment Wednesday on $10,000 bond. He has a preliminary hearing next Wednesday in Niles Municipal Court.
