HUBBARD

A 37-year-old Pennsylvania woman is charged with child endangering, possession of drug abuse instruments, and possession of drug paraphernalia after the car she was riding in crashed on the 3000 block of South Main Street in Hubbard Township.

Christina Baxter, of Mitchell Road, New Castle, was a front seat passenger of a Jeep Liberty that crashed into a roadside ditch about 9 p.m. on June 26.

Her 4-year-old son, who was traveling in the back of the car but was not secured in a booster seat, was not injured, but police say he was visibly distraught.

The driver, 30-year-old Jesse Myers, of Martha Street, New Castle, does not have a valid license and told police initially that Baxter was driving. Witnesses said that Myers exited the car by the driver’s side door, and Baxter later confirmed that Myers was the driver when the Jeep crashed.

Police suspected Myers had been using drugs at the time of the crash. The car contained hypodermic needle equipment, a belt that could be used as an arm tie-off, and a bloody handkerchief with small dots of blood that police said is consistent with needle use. Police noted that Myers had blood coming from his arm and marks from previous drug use.

Police searched Baxter’s purse and found five hypodermic needles, a metal spoon and a metal measuring cup both with blackened bottoms, and a shoelace that police say could be used for tying off the arm.

Baxter and her son were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, and Myers rode along with them.

Baxter was later charged and released on a $14,000 bond.

Police informed Lawrence County Children’s Services about the incident.

Baxter is scheduled to appear at Girard Municipal Court at 9 a.m. July 9.

Myers did not appear at the Hubbard Township Police Department for further questioning, and did not respond to officers’ calls. A warrant has been issued for his arrest for endangering children and falsification.
