HOLIDAY HAPPENINGS | Fourth of July

MAHONING COUNTY

Austintown: An ecumenical service will be at 8:30 a.m. at Austin Log Cabin, 3797 S. Raccoon Road. Fitch color guard will present the colors, and keynote speaker will be Rev. Russell Adams of Western Reserve United Methodist Church. A continental breakfast will follow.

Austintown: Austintown Fireworks Celebration will be from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. today at Austintown Township Park. Fireworks will be at 10 p.m. Live music throughout the day will include Northern Whale from 4:30 to 5:30, Perfect Pair from 5:45 to 7:15 and The Vegas Band from 7:20 to 9:30. A cornhole tournament will begin at 5:30. Concessions provided by Molnar’s. A police car, firetruck, ambulance and Stat MedEvac helicopter will be on display. Kids DARE Identikits will be assembled from 5:30 to 6:30. Bounce-arounds will be provided by Austintown Bounce.

Austintown: A parade will start at 2 p.m., traveling north from Raccoon and Kirk roads and ending at Falcon Drive.

Boardman: The Youngstown Symphonic Band with conductor Paul Rossi will perform a free concert at Boardman Park at 7 p.m. Guests are urged to bring lawn chairs or blankets. Concessions will be available.

Boardman: The Youngstown Symphonic Band, with conductor Paul Rossi, will perform with the Seraphim Chorus directed by Kris Harper during Boardman Park’s Independence Day celebration 8 p.m. Saturday. Fireworks will follow. In case of rain, the performance will take place at Boardman High School Performing Arts Centre.

Canfield: Canfield will host Fourth of July activities from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Firecracker Four Mile Fun Run registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Township Hall, with the kids’ race commencing at 8:15 and the run at 8:30. In the gazebo on the village green, J.D. Eicher and the Goodnights will perform at 8:45 and the Youngstown Symphonic Band at 1 p.m. Decorated bicycle judging will start at 9:30 at the Canfield Fairgrounds, and awards will be presented at 10. Canfield’s parade will begin at 10:10 at the fairgrounds and travel to the village green. Children’s games and concessions will be available.

North Lima: The Youngstown Symphonic Band performs patriotic music from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Woodworth Park.

Struthers: A parade will start at noon, traveling from and ending at the Fifth Street Plaza. Refreshments will be provided after the parade at Struthers United Methodist Church on Sexton Street.

Youngstown: A hands-on history open house celebrating America’s birthday will be from 2 to 4 p.m. today at the Arms Family Museum. Guests can add to a patriotic collage and complete crafts that reflect America’s independence.

Youngstown: The Mahoning Valley Historical Society will honor active military personnel and veterans with a Military Appreciation Weekend from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Ave. Admission to the museum will be free that weekend for all military and their families. Outdoor activities will include games and crafts for kids, a basket raffle, food, drink, and a chance to sign a “thank you” banner. Guest speakers will appear each day at 2 p.m. in the Carriage House. Military artifacts will be on display. Nonmilitary families will receive half-price admission with a donation of nonperishable food items or toiletries that will be sent to the Youngstown Veterans Clinic.

Youngstown: The Wanda Hunt Band performs 7 p.m. today at Morley Pavilion in Mill Creek Park.

Youngstown: Steve Vuich will perform on the terrace at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 5 to 7 p.m. today. Cost is $10.

Youngstown: Fireworks will be launched from behind the Covelli Centre starting at 9:30 to 9:45 p.m. No parking will be available at Covelli. Rain date is July 5.

TRUMBULL COUNTY

Howland: A Fourth of July parade and celebration will honor active military and veterans. Events include a 5K Stars and Stripes Run/Walk sponsored by St. Joseph Health Center starting at 8 a.m. A township parade will commence at 10 a.m. A pet parade, car show and pizza eating competition will begin at noon, with more games, entertainment, music and food offered until 3 p.m.

Newton Falls: Fourth of July festivities in Newton Falls will continue through the holiday. The Fuzz will perform from 7 to 11 p.m. today and Loose Connection from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursday. The holiday committee will host a parade at 10 a.m. starting at the First Church of God, 426 W. Broad St. Fireworks will be launched at 10 p.m. in City Park, 52 E. Quarry St.

Niles: The city will host a fireworks display at 10 p.m. in the downtown area.

Niles: Fireworks will follow the 7 p.m. Mahoning Valley Scrappers game against the Williamsport Crosscutters.

Warren: The W.D. Packard Concert Band will perform at 8 p.m. at the music hall’s south lawn band shell. Fireworks will follow at dusk. Admission is free for both events courtesy of the Packard Trust.

COLUMBIANA COUNTY

Columbiana: Fourth of July events will take place all day at Firestone Park. Events include: fishing contest for ages 3-12 at the duck pond, 8:30 a.m.; pet contest at the west end of the football field, 11 a.m.; canoe race at the duck pond, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; family games and activities at the east end of the football field, 1 to 3 p.m.; ice-cream- eating contest for ages 3-12 at the concession area, 3 p.m.; watermelon-eating contest for ages 6 and older at the concession area, 3:30 p.m.; Doc Pritchard Calliope concert in the gazebo, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.; Canfield Community Band in the gazebo, 5:30 to 7 p.m.; Everyday America, a Sugarland tribute band, on the hill from 7 to 8 p.m. and continuing 8:30 to 10 p.m.; flag-bearing sky divers at the football field, 8 p.m.; Ken Rambo tribute to veterans, 8:10 p.m.; flag ceremony at the east end of the football field, 8:20 p.m.; fireworks display by Phantom Fireworks, 10 p.m.

East Palestine: The Fourth of July will be celebrated from 1 to 10 p.m. at East Palestine Park. Attractions include: Alumni breakfast at the community center, 8 to 11 a.m.; basket auctions, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; pet show at park exit, 10 a.m.; decorated bike parade, 12:30 p.m.; talent show, 1 p.m.; games and an awesome people presentation, 2 p.m.; entertainment from Hannah Pasco, Ben Flint, Anthony Monteleone, Chub Scouts, Passing Through and Reign of One, 2:30 through 10 p.m.; duck derby, 4 p.m.; basketball free throw competition, 5:15 p.m.; and a 50-50 parachute jump from county commissioner Tim Weigle, 8:30 p.m. Fireworks by F&V Fireworks will start at 10 p.m. In the event of rain, festivities will move to Friday.

Lisbon: The 31st annual July 4 Guilford Lake Boat Parade will start at 2 p.m. The judges’ review stand will be at the boat launch area on Shore Lane, and awards ceremony at the stand will take place at 5 p.m.

MERCER COUNTY

Grove City: The Harrisville Community Band performs at 8 p.m. and will be followed by a fireworks display, all at the Grove City College football field. Free.

LAWRENCE COUNTY

New Castle: Fourth of July activities will be offered from 2 to 10 p.m. at Pearson Park in Neshannock Township. There will be free hot dogs, water and face painting from 2 to 4 p.m. An ice cream and pie social from 2 to 5 p.m. will cost $4. Music will be provided by The Dorals and the Red Coat Band. Fireworks begin at 10 p.m.

New Wilmington: A River City Brass Band concert will start at 7:30 p.m. at the Brittain Lake area on the campus of Westminster College. Guests are urged to bring a chair or blanket for the 9:15 p.m. fireworks. Food vendors will be available. If it rains, festivities will be moved to the Anderson Amphitheater.
