Ohio nuclear plant remains down due to malfunction

OAK HARBOR, Ohio (AP) — Operators of a nuclear power plant in northern Ohio say it likely will remain shut down for a couple weeks for repairs.

FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Corp. said Monday that the Davis-Besse plant southeast of Toledo was shut down suddenly Saturday night. Workers identified a problem with wiring connected to the motor for one of the plant’s four reactor-coolant pumps.

A spokeswoman told The Blade of Toledo that she didn’t know what caused the wiring problem with the motor.

The spokeswoman says there are no safety problems or threat to the public. Workers just want to make sure it’s fixed before the plant is started back up.

Electric customers should see no change in their service as a result of the shutdown.
