STRUTHERS

A man was arrested in Struthers Tuesday afternoon in the death of a 13-year-old boy, police said.

An investigation that began last Wednesday resulted in the arrest of Zaryl G. Bush, 43, of Creed Street, on the basis of a warrant issued, according to a press statement from Struthers police.

The Mahoning Valley Violent Crimes Task Force arrested Bush at 3:37 p.m. on charges stemming from the death of his former girlfriend’s son. Struthers detectives said Bush and the woman had been dating for three years, Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV reported. Police received a call from a relative on Jan. 23 who believed the injuries were “suspicious in nature,” authorities told WFMJ.

“We are still waiting on the autopsy results, but the juvenile was taken to the hospital with head injuries and died after going to the hospital with those head injuries,” Detective Ray Greenwood told The Vindicator.

Police said the boy’s face was swollen and he had frostbite on his feet, police said. Police also said the boy was brain-dead and taken off life support early Sunday.

The investigation is still ongoing, and more charges could be leveled against Bush. He currently is charged with first-degree murder and will be charged today with first-degree rape, Greenwood said. The mother, who has not been charged, has not been cooperative in the investigation, detect- ives said, adding that Mahoning County Children Services took custody of the woman’s other children.

Further details on how the juvenile received the head injuries were not available as a result of the open investigation.

Bush was booked at the Struthers Police Department before being taken to the Mahoning County jail, where he is being held without bond.

Arraignment is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. today.

Court records show Bush has nine offenses on his record, including three alcohol-related offenses. The only other criminal offense for which Bush had been charged was for open container in 2007. Detectives said he has a pending assault trial after being accused of attacking a 20-year-old who crossed through the backyard of the former girlfriend’s house.

Struthers Police Chief R.T. Roddy said there has not been a homicide in the city in at least a decade. Vindicator records dating back to 2000 did not show any homicides reported in Struthers.

Stories like these make me so angry with our justice system. If the mother insists on not helping put the scum away then charge her with obstruction. Hurting any child is unfathomable but it continually happens, when will the penalties start fitting the crime. The Chardon school shooter getting away with no death penalty and killing 3 peers his own age and wounding another, how can he claim he randomly shoot when he aimed and shot at them and shot the one student trying to get away from him. It was planned who he was shooting just helps his defense making it not random. As for Struthers, this is first I heard of him being charged for rape from stories I read on news app, which makes what he did even more heinous. Jerk should be beat to death as his penalty. Make punishment fit the crime, give victims their civil rights and when a parent impedes justice charge them. Makes sense to me...

Struthers has a drug epidemic within it's borders and this seems to be the result of the disease that is infesting the once fine city. So tragic for all involved. The mother should be charged as an accomplice at the very least.

Hey Boardman, drugs are everywhere!!! In every community! Struthers has large pockets of fine citizens. And, by the way, I do not live there.
The basic message here is the death of a sweet boy! I knew him! Sweet.!!! And most importantly, when is this mother going to jail ?? I am sure the police are getting that case together carefully.!

It just makes me terribly sad to see cases like this. How can a mother not look out for her children? How lonely this young man must have felt without even his own mother on his side. This man is Garbage!!! I am sure he has left a trail of abused people along the trail of his life. Lock him up and throw away the key!!!

I hate seeing these stories where mom's boyfriend harms or kills her children. Single mom's have got to be more selective about who they allow in their children's lives. If you meet a guy who has a problem with alcohol or a rap sheet, stay away from him. That bad boy you find so attractive could be a danger to your children.

As a resident of Struthers it saddens me to hear of stories like these. As a mother it is heart breaking to know anything like this happened to a child and another mother allowed it to happen. Throw that animal away and never let him see the light of day and lock that pitiful excuse of a mother up too. Why did this little boy have to endure such a thing, what did he do so wrong that these people treated him in such a disgraceful manner? I Pray that both of them, the mother and the boyfriend get more than 30 yrs for this heinous crime.

Very, very sad...hopefully the other children will be placed someplace safe because obviously their mother is incapable of taking care of them as well.

I can hardly keep from throwing up right now. This child had been victimized for years and his "mother" did nothing. Had I known, I'd have taken him and his siblings into my own home. I don't live in Struthers, but grew up there. Please don't blame a good city for heinous actions from this animal. Bad people live everywhere. This animal deserves to endure 100 times more pain than the boy did.....

Sad story, no child should ever have to go through. But the part about this story that is even sadder is if the police officers or children services representatives would have removed the child prior to this incident, unless they had clear cut medical evidence, a disclosure by a child, or a person who was willing to not only report the abuse, but also testify in court, they would be facing a million dollar wrongful civil lawsuit.... #easytojudge #policeofficerwife #formercsbworker #reformohioabuselaws
