Girard residents wondering just what they heard today

GIRARD

People reported what they thought might be an earthquake in areas of Girard this afternoon, but there was no report of a quake on the U.S. Geological Survey earthquakes map.

The map records earthquakes in real time.

Posters on Facebook reported feeling the shaking and hearing the boom around 4:30 p.m.

Police and fire dispatches in the city said they received no calls and had no idea what it could have been that people felt and heard. The Trumbull County emergency dispatch center also said it had no calls.

On the Girard Website Facebook page, posters said they felt their houses shake and heard a boom.

James Sotirovich, who lives on Earl Street, told The Vindicator the “shock wave” is nothing new. It happens a few times a year, he said.

“I don’t think it’s an earthquake,” he said. “It’s been going on for years down here.

“It’s like a loud boom, it rattles all your windows.

“It was so loud a couple of years ago, everyone went out and turned on their porch lights,” he said.
