Corrections officer charged with indecent exposure

Staff report

CANFIELD

An Ohio State Penitentiary corrections sergeant has been charged with two counts of public indecency for purportedly exposing his genitals to two 12-year-old girls in a Canfield residence Jan. 20.

Michael Johns, 50, of Leffingwell Road, Canfield, who has worked for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction since December 1992, was placed on paid administrative leave Monday pending the outcome of the court proceedings, said JoEllen Smith, ODRC communications chief.

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office filed the misdemeanor charges Monday, and Johns will be arraigned on them at 5 p.m. today before Judge Scott D. Hunter in Mahoning County Area Court, Canfield.

A county Children Services Board caseworker conducted separate video interviews of the girls, with a deputy sheriff witnessing the interviews, but Johns has made no statement to authorities, the sheriff’s department said.

The case is being prosecuted by Nicholas Modarelli, chief assistant county prosecutor.

Johns is represented by Atty. Scott Cochran of Youngstown.
