UPDATE | Correa guilty; gets 46 years to life

A jury of eight women and four men found 22-year-old Daro Correa guilty of murder this morning.

Judge John M. Durkin then sentenced him to 46 years to life.

Correa, 22, of Syracuse, N.Y., was on trial for aggravated murder in the killing of 30-year-old Randy Cappelli of Campbell on the first day of the year in 2011.

Cappelli was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds, including at least one in the head, about 4:40 a.m. after police were called to the 1000 block of Shady Run Road on the South Side because of reports of gunfire.

When officers arrived, they saw Cappelli face up on the ground a few feet from the passenger side of a Toyota Scion, which was on fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several shell casings were found around Cappelli by police responding to the call.
