Jim Tressel, former Youngstown State and Ohio State University football coach, will serve as guest speaker for the Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Banquet.

The Curbstone banquet will be May 5 at Mr. Anthony’s Banquet Center with 13 honorees slated for induction.

Stark takes second

Gabe Stark of Howland placed second at 145 pounds for the Wadsworth GIT Green Machine Wrestling Club.

In the first round Stark pinned Eugene Smith (John Adams) at 25 seconds, followed by a 4-1 decision over Zack Ladich (Field).

In the third round Stark pinned Nathaniel Pruitt (John Adams) at 3:17, followed by a 7-2 decision over Abdulhabib Abdulhabib (Wadsworth).

For the title, Jake Ryan (Olentangy Liberty) took a 6-3 decision from Stark.

Running in his first marathon, Luis Rivero Gonzalez of Guatemala won the Miami Marathon on Sunday.

Rivero, a professional runner for more than two years, had a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, 14 seconds in the event that drew 25,000 runners.

“Since it was my first marathon, I went all-out from the very start,” said Rivero Gonzalez, who earned his law degree from Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala in November. “As the race went on, I continued to feel strong.”

David Tuwei of Kenya finished second at 2:28:15.

Jockey Cohen takes 3 in Aqueduct return


Jockey David Cohen celebrated his return to Aqueduct by winning three races Sunday, including the $73,500 Cagey Exuberance Stakes aboard Celtic Chant.

Back in New York for the first time since the fall, Cohen guided the 5-year-old to a front-running victory, her eighth in 22 starts, in the race for fillies and mares. The second leading rider at Aqueduct two of the previous three winters, Cohen most recently competed at Gulfstream Park in Florida.

Celtic Chant, trained by Chris Englehart, ran six furlongs in 1:10.36, beating Delightful Quality, the 4-5 favorite, by a half-length. She paid $10, $4.20 and $2.60.

Cape Verde, South Africa soccer advance


Cape Verde reached the African Cup of Nations soccer quarterfinals in its first appearance at a major tournament, rallying to defeat Angola 2-1 Sunday night on Heldon Ramos’ goal in second-half injury time.

Angola went ahead in the 33rd minute on an own goal by Cape Verde captain Fernando Neves, but Fernando Varela tied the score with a header in the 82nd.

Host South Africa advanced when it came from behind twice to tie Morocco 2-2 at Durban.

Morocco went ahead on goals by Issam Adoua in the 10th and Abdelilah Elhafid in the 82nd, but Bafana Bafana got goals from May Mahlangu in the 71st and Siyabonga Sangweni in the 86th.

Tom-Jelte Slagter wins Tour Down Under

ADELAIDE, Australia

Rookie Tom-Jelte Slagter claimed overall victory in the Tour Down Under on Sunday as Germany’s Andre Greipel won the final stage to notch the 100th win of his professional career.

Slagter posted his first stage win as a professional in the third of the Tour’s six stages on Thursday and was able to parlay that success into a 17-second win on general classification.
