Hubbard Public Library is looking for new member for trustees board


The public library is accepting letters of interest for a position on its board of trustees. According to a press release, the position begins in March and continues until 2016. Applicants must live in Trumbull County, but Hubbard residents will be given preference. Letters detailing qualifications can be emailed to Library Director Sherry Ault at by Feb. 8 or sent to 436 West Liberty St., Hubbard, 44425.

Free tax services in Youngstown


One Step to Life Inc., 3610 Southern Blvd., will be providing free tax services for the 2012-2013 tax season.

The Ohio Benefit Bank is teaming up with One Step to Life Inc. to fulfill a wide variety of neighborhood needs.

One Step to Life Inc. is a free tax-filing provider and will file income tax returns free of charge. Walk-ins will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. To be seen outside of those times, call 330-781-7150 for an appointment.

The Ohio Benefit Bank has enabled One Step to Life to provide assistance with foreclosure relief, assistance with utility bills, assistance with applying for county assistance and FAFSA, investigating eligibility for certain programs, grants and loans, and helping youth to identify and cope with issues such as peer pressure, family addictions and academic trouble.

Plunge for Special Olympics at Mosquito Lake, Geneva Lake


Special Olympics Ohio is sponsoring the Geneva Polar Plunge for Special Olympics on Feb. 9 at Geneva State Park and a plunge at Mosquito Lake State Park on March 9.

The Geneva plunge includes a traditional plunge and Super Plunge. Some pre-registration and entertainment will be Feb. 8.

Day-of-event registration and check-in is from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park lodge. A high school student plunge starts at 1 p.m., while the main plunge starts at 2 p.m.

Special art exhibit set in Warren


An exhibit of art work of all media created by people dealing with mental illness is on display at Trumbull Art Gallery, 191 East Market Street, through Friday. Valley Counseling Services along with Valley Community Mental Health Foundation are hosts of the third annual event. It is free and open to the public.

US Rep. Tim Ryan gets involved in talks at Phillips Manufacturing


On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13th of Niles, met with George Kubat, president and CEO of Phillips Manufacturing of Niles, Kubat’s management team, the United Steelworkers International Union and local union representatives in an effort to end the 4-month strike at Phillips Manufacturing.

“I want to thank Mr. Kubat and his team for making the trip from Omaha to help work towards resolving this labor dispute,” Ryan said in a written statement.

“We had a constructive exchange of ideas with both sides offering creative solutions to the pending issues. While there is not yet an agreement, both sides demonstrated good faith and agreed to meet again in the very near future.”

The 44 members of United Steelworkers Local 4564 went on strike at the Walnut Street plant Sept. 13 after an impasse in contract negotiations.

Western Pa. authorities discover victims of murder and suicide


State police say a western Pennsylvania man and woman are dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Troopers in Butler County went to the Center Township home at about 1:40 a.m. Saturday in response to reports of a shooting.

Police said they found the body of 45-year-old Sonja Kummer lying on the ground outside the home with apparent gunshot wounds.

Troopers entered and found the body of 49-year-old Dean Vaughn Clawson. Police said he had sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police said both individuals were pronounced dead at the home.

Rollover accident reported on Warren bypass near Elm Road


A man was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital with minor injuries after his car rolled over and off of the state Route 5 Bypass just east of Elm Road on Saturday night.

The westbound car rolled down an embankment and nearly ended up in the WalMart parking lot, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The accident was reported at 10:06 p.m.
