4 families homeless after Cortland blaze; Howland victim ID'd

Staff report

Four families were left homeless Saturday morning from a fire in a four-unit condominium on Lakeview Drive just south of Lakeview Middle School.

One resident was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation, but residents of all four condos escaped before firefighters arrived.

The fire was reported at 9:30 a.m. and caused nearly a complete loss to the two units in the middle of the building, lesser smoke and water damage to the two units on the sides.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is helping to investigate the cause of the blaze, but it remained undetermined as of Saturday afternoon, said Cortland Fire Capt. Pat Dales.

The American Red Cross provided assistance to the four families involved.

Meanwhile, Howland Fire Department has identified the woman who died in a Friday night fire on Deforest Road as Joyce Barker, 71.

Barker’s home was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived at 6:30 p.m.

Barker’s body was found in a back bedroom. Firefighters believe she used an oxygen tank, which may have contributed to the blaze.

The American Red Cross assisted Barker’s son, who also lived at the home but was not there when the fire started.
