Poland Seminary High School hosted a financial aid workshop Jan. 7 for students preparing to go to college. The workshop was led by the Associate Director of the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at Youngstown State University, Gina McHenry.
The workshop was not just helpful to students planning to attend YSU, but also had many great resources for students planning to attend other public or private universities around the country.
The workshop started with a discussion of the different types of scholarships offered at YSU, including scholarships based on academic testing through the ACT and SAT, like the Red and White and President’s Scholarships, and how the website can help students apply to other schools,
The discussion then moved to explaining the importance of the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) and how to fill it out. The FAFSA allows students to qualify for grants, loans, and federal work-study programs, based on financial need.
A new tool this year to the financial aid scene is the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. This program allows the financial aid teams to grab information directly from your tax return if a student is selected for reviewing. This tool dramatically speeds up the process behind reviewing and allows students to get their financial aid even faster.
