Two city men who said they were seriously injured in a hazing ritual have sued the fraternity and 10 men alleged to be associated with it, including the nine men charged with felonious assault in a separate criminal case.

Resean M. Yancey, of North Osborn Avenue, and Breylon Stubbs, of Dryden Avenue, filed their civil lawsuit Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

The lawsuit is assigned to Judge James C. Evans, who also is handling the criminal matter, which is set for jury trial May 13.

The civil complaint, filed by Atty. James S. Gentile, requests a jury trial and more than $25,000 per plaintiff from each defendant.

The nightly beatings, which purportedly were part of the hazing ritual, reportedly occurred early last year in a South Side residence.

Defendants in the civil complaint, who are also charged in the criminal case, are: Michael Charles, 26, of Illinois Avenue; Jerome Justice, 29, of Tremble Avenue, Campbell; Jason R. Anderson, 28, of Woodhurst Drive; Jairus Ford, 33, of Greeley Lane; Lavell Sharp, 26, of Green Acres Drive, Liberty; Trey McCune, 22, of Ohio Avenue; Wade Hampton, 25, of Deer Creek Court; Edward Robertson, 29, of Catalina Avenue; and Raheem Satterthaite, 23, of Illinois Avenue.

Other civil-complaint defendants are the Philadelphia-based Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity and its Youngstown chapter; Kenneth Andrews of Woodford Avenue; and five John Doe defendants, whose identities are now unknown to the plaintiffs.

Andrews and the fraternity itself are not charged in the criminal case; and Andrews’ specific alleged role in the matter was not identified in the lawsuit.

YSU’s Student Judicial Board voted to suspend the fraternity for 15 years in February 2012 after the hazing allegations, according to Vindicator files.
