Lent, a season of spiritual renewal, begins Ash Wednesday, which is Feb. 13.
Forty days is a traditional number of discipline, devotion and preparation in the Bible. Lent also lasts for 40 days, excluding Sundays.
A listing of Ash Wednesday services and other Lenten programs will be published Feb. 9.

The Rev. James Korda will speak on “The Church and the Media” during Dinner and Doctrine on Jan. 28 at Casesse’s MVR Italian Restaurant, 410 N. Walnut St.
The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner (order and pay on your own from the regular menu) followed by the free program at 7 followed by discussion.
Father Korda, pastoral director of the Catholic Television Network of Youngstown, will share his thoughts and experiences in media and the Catholic Church.
Dinner and Doctrine is a cooperative effort of Youngstown-area parishes to provide faith formation for adults.
Youngstown Chapter of Igniting New Life Ministries International, an interdenominational ministry, will host prophetess Debra Ingram of Youngstown at its next meeting. She is a member of Destiny International Ministries.
The group will meet Monday at Georgeanna Parker Activity Center in Boardman Park, 325 Boardman-Poland Road, Route 224.
Fellowship will begin at 6:30 p.m. with ministry at 7.
Greater Life Church will conduct its first service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Glenwood Middle School auditorium, 7635 Glenwood Ave.
The church will have a children’s ministry for babies to fifth-graders.
Hours for Life
Holy Hours for Life will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St.
The Holy Hours will mark the 40th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States.
Participants will have the opportunity to attend benediction and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, pray the rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.
Teens in the diocese may pray together from 5 to 6. The Youth Ministry students from the cathedral will host a reception for teens at 6 in the parish center. A general reception will be at 7 for all who attend.
Bishop George V. Murry will be the main celebrant and homilist for the 17th annual White Mass at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 27 at St. Columba Cathedral, 154 W. Wood St.
A reception will follow in St. Columba Hall for members of the Lourdes Guild.
The annual White Mass is sponsored by the Lourdes Guild, an association of Catholic physicians and dentists of the Diocese of Youngstown. The Lourdes Guild assists the diocesan Church in upholding Catholic medical ethics to the medical profession and wider culture.

Retrouvaille of Youngstown is a peer ministry that helps troubled couples fulfill the commitment of their marriage sacrament. It teaches couples new methods of communication and other tools to help them.
The program includes a weekend seminar plus six followup sessions. A weekend session is scheduled Feb. 15-17 at the Holiday Inn South, 7410 South Ave., Boardman.
