Ridge school design

MINERAL RIDGE

The Weathersfield school board approved sending designs for the Seaborn Elementary School renovations and addition project and the Mineral Ridge High School renovation project to the Ohio Facility and Construction Commission.

Construction and renovation is expected to begin in June for the high school and Seaborn.

The district plans a $25.4 million project, with $17.8 million in local funds and $9.05 million for the local match, which is also to include “locally funded initiatives” that will pay for a new junior high gymnasium at the high school.

Project architect is Summer Barker of MS Consultants of Youngstown and Hammond Construction of Canton.

Extradition in killing

WARREN

Raymond Mayrant, 25, who police in Bronx, N.Y., say killed the 59-year-old mother of his daughter’s mother Jan. 3, has waived extradition in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Mayrant remained in the Trumbull County jail Thursday morning but will be taken back to New York to face charges.

A Bronx detective notified local authorities Jan. 10 that Mayrant was in Warren, and Warren police located the car he was driving near the Warren Family Mission on Elm Road.

More investigation determined that Mayrant was working in the Family Mission’s Youngstown Road facility, so members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitives Task Force arrested him there.

Cop reports assault

WARREN

Michael Joll, 40, of Hiram Avenue, Niles, was charged with felonious assault and disorderly conduct Wednesday after he purportedly attacked a police officer who responded to an apartment building for an intoxicated male.

Sgt. Sherry McMahon rode the elevator to the third floor of 250 Tod Avenue NW, and “As the elevator doors opened and I took one step off of the elevator, the suspect attacked me in a very furious manner.”

She punched Joll twice in the face and kicked him in the mid-section, then fired a stun gun at him. During the arrest, Joll twisted Sgt. McMahon’s hand. Joll, who was taken to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital, was not arraigned Thursday.

Hearing on housing

Poland

The Poland Village Board of Zoning Appeals will have a public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday to discuss an application for two variances at 233 W. McKinley Way (U.S. Route 224).

The village planning commission denied plans for a proposed senior-living complex, which then required developers to apply for the variances.

The proposed complex would have 51 units to house people age 55 and older who make less than 60 percent of adjusted median income, or about $30,000 or less a year, according to Vindicator files.

Nurses upset over pact

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association, which represents about 425 registered nurses at ValleyCare Northside Medical Center, conducted informational meetings Thursday to update its membership on contract talks with Community Health System, owner of ValleyCare.

Eric Williams, YGDNA president, said the purpose of the meetings was to present CHS’s contract offer and to get feedback from the membership.

Members are upset, but no strike vote was taken. The next negotiating session is scheduled for Feb. 13, Williams said.
