Pee Wee Phantoms battling for playoff spot

The Youngstown Phantoms Pee Wee AA team traveled to New Kensington, Pa., last weekend to compete against the Pittsburgh Huskies. The Phantoms started the weekend holding on to the fifth spot in the PAHL, while the Huskies were at the seventh spot. The top six teams advance to the playoffs.

Youngstown outshot the Huskies 11-3 in the first period, but trailed 1-0 at the end. In the second period, Pittsburgh shot 12 times and scored twice to put the Phantoms behind 3-0 to start the final period. The Phantoms continued their shooting in the third period with 15 shots on goal. but fell short, losing 3-2.

Devin Whitaker (Boardman) recorded the Phantoms’ first score at 5:45 left in the period. He was assisted by RJ Pozzuto and Robbie Stanko (Canfield). Nineteen seconds later, Stone Elias (Canfield) scored with assists by Whitaker and Alex Ritz. Youngstown outshot the Huskies, 37-21.

On Sunday, the Phantoms traveled to Allegheny to face the Badgers. Youngstown scored in the first period when Maguire Franko (Poland) broke through the defense and shot past the goalie. Youngstown thought another goal was scored in the second period, but it was ruled no-goal by the official.

The Badgers scored the tying goal in the third period. The final was 1-1, giving the Phantoms one point for the weekend. They now sit in the sixth and final spot for the playoffs.
