Man charged after hitting puppy, driving away

PHILADELPHIA— Dogs get hit by cars routinely, but usually the driver doesn’t get booked on a hit-and-run charge and end up in jail.

But that’s what happened to Rashawn Antonio Robertson, 21, of Clifton Heights, Pa., this week.

It all started when King, a German shepherd-Doberman pinscher puppy, slipped out the back door of his home and into an alley on Tuesday. He darted into the path of a car and was killed.

The incident would have ended there if not for Robertson’s behavior, Police Superintendent Michael J. Chitwood said.

The 4-month-old King was a gift to James Watson, 19, from his uncle, and when Watson’s mother saw an allegedly speeding vehicle strike the dog, she called 911.

Police searched the area and spotted the car Robertson was driving with blood on it and fresh damage. Police said Robertson told them he didn’t know what he had hit.

He became involved in an altercation with police, was wrestled to the ground, arrested, and he agreed to a blood test, according to court documents.

He was charged with careless driving, reckless driving, failure to stop, driving under the influence, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, and was taken to the Delaware County jail.

Said Chitwood, “As far as I am concerned, it is a hit and run.”

Great, now those nutjobs like PETA are going to get involved and say we need to ban vehicles and alcohol.
