Local musicians Katie O’Neill and Matt Boser put together a fun, varied night of music played on the violin and guitar at Vintage Estate in Boardman Dec. 28. The duo played pieces from classic rock, blues, folk, and even a few holiday tunes as patrons talked, ate and listened.

The two met at Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music, where O’Neill is a graduate student in the master’s degree program and Boser is a classical guitar major working on his bachelor’s degree.

“We met at school,” said O’Neill. “We would talk about music and I had an interest in learning the Celtic style of violin playing. We played an open mic night at Vintage Estate and the crowd was responsive so the manager asked us if we would play a Friday night show.”

Songs played at the event included a rendition of Piano Man by Billy Joel, classical Irish folk song The Star of the County Down, and My Favorite Things from The Sound of Music.

“I love the environment at Vintage Estate and the employees are really friendly. It’s an oasis in Boardman,” said O’Neill.

O’Neill has played with the Southern Florida Symphony Orchestra, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, Dana Orchestra, and Trans Siberian Orchestra, among others. She has been playing her violin for more than 17 years.

“My advice to those who wish to learn how to play is to do it now. Don’t wait another moment. If you love music you won’t regret it, I promise.”
