Brown unanimous pick as top scholar athlete

Youngstown State senior women’s basketball player Brandi Brown has been unanimously voted the Horizon League scholar athlete of the month for December.

It is the second straight month that she has earned the honor.

Brown scored at least 20 points in four of YSU’s six games and collected three double-doubles as the Penguins went 4-2 in December.

Brown is a two-time Academic All-Horizon League selection and carries a 3.75 GPA in communications studies.

YSU guard Mady in Texas vs. Nation

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State senior Lamar Mady was chosen for the Texas vs. the National college football all-star game, which will be played at 8 p.m. Feb. 2 at Eagle Stadium in Allen, Texas.

FOX Sports will televise the game.

Mady, a two-year starter at guard, earned honorable mention all-conference last season for the Penguins.

Scrappers announce four staffing changes

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers announced the promotion of four front office members.

Heather Sahli has been promoted to Assistant General Manager, Marketing.

Matt Thompson has been promoted to Assistant General Manager, Sales while Brad Hooser has been promoted to Assistant General Manager, Operations.

In addition, Chris Sumner has been promoted to Group Sales Manager.

Possible contempt for Ohio St. case lawyer

COLUMBUS

The Ohio Supreme Court is threatening to find in contempt of court the attorney whose emails triggered an NCAA investigation that cost the football coach his job at Ohio State University.

At issue is the alleged failure of Columbus attorney Christopher Cicero to file paperwork as part of his one-year law license suspension.

Cicero had a month to file the paperwork, including notification of current clients, following last year’s Supreme Court ruling that said he violated professional rules of conduct that prohibit revealing information from meetings with a client or a prospective client.

Ken Whisenhunt is new Chargers OC

SAN DIEGO

The San Diego Chargers hired former Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt on Thursday to serve as the team’s offensive coordinator.

New Chargers coach Mike McCoy lauded Whisenhunt’s experience with the Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers, saying Whisenhunt has a “very creative mind” and will be a great asset for San Diego.

Whisenhunt was fired by the Cardinals on Dec. 31 after six mostly losing seasons but he also led the franchise to its lone Super Bowl appearance in 2009. The Cardinals started the 2012 season 4-0, but lost 11 of 12.

Armstrong unlikely to receive Tour invite

PARIS

Lance Armstrong is unlikely to receive an invitation from Tour de France organizers as part of the celebrations for the 100th edition of the race this year.

As part of the festivities, all riders who managed to finish a Tour de France race have been invited for the final day, with the total number of invitations numbering about 4,000 and about 500 former riders expected to be at the finish line on the Champs-Elysees.
