UPDATE: Man killed in Youngstown West Side house fire is ID'd

A man is dead after his West Side house caught fire about 1 p.m. today.

The fire is still burning and has destroyed the 1 1/2-story structure at 362 Broadview Ave., but firefighters have it under control, said Fire Chief John J. O’Neill Jr.

The victim was identified by fire officials as Mike Fergus, 53. He was found dead by firefighters just a few feet away from his front door, O’Neill said. He was connected to an oxygen tank.

“Our crews got to him in a few minutes after the fire, but he didn’t make it,” O’Neill said.

A relative of the victim who was at the house at the time of the fire was able to escape out of the back of the structure.

Fire investigators were talking to the relative this afternoon about what happened.

The body will be turned over to the Mahoning County coroner’s office.

Fire officials say this is the first fatal fire in the city in 2013. There were no fire deaths in 2012.
