Russell Gillam is installed as master of Argus Lodge
Argus Lodge 545 Free & Accepted Masons recently installed Russell W. Gillam Jr. of Canfield as master of the Lodge for the coming year.
The title of master, instead of president, reflects the Masonic tradition of using ceremonies and titles from the stonemasons of the Middle Ages. When the great cathedrals of Europe were being built, the Mason in charge was referred to as a “master of the work.”
Gillam was born in Youngstown in 1944. His family moved to Bradford, Pa., and he graduated from Bradford High School in 1961.
After serving in the U.S. Army as an intelligence officer from 1963 to 1966, he moved to Canfield where he lives with his wife Susan.
They have five children: Russell III, Christopher, Beth Gardner, Allison Sandusky and Abby Stouffer.
He is a consultant for AT&T after retiring from the company in 1992.
Gillam joined Argus Lodge in 1969 and has been an officer since 1973 and past master of 1979. He is a member and past presiding officer of the Valley of Youngstown, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, York Rite and The Order of the Eastern Star.
