Local auto sales slide in 2012

Despite last year’s better-than-expected car and truck sales throughout eastern Ohio, the final month of 2012 shows sales slid from where they finished in 2011.

Traditionally a slow month for big-ticket purchases as consumers focus on the holidays, December data from the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio reveal that of the region’s top dealers, sales slid by 188 vehicles compared with November.

In that category, Chevrolet led the pack with 400 sales, but only Honda made a month-over-month gain, selling just four more cars in December. Overall, Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Kia and Dodge, the top five last month, sold 1,534 more vehicles in 2011.

The Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze was listed fifth on the ADAEO’s top-40 new-models list in December with 52 sold, while the company’s Silverado, Equinox and Malibu rounded out the top three, respectively, with a combined 231 sold. Still, the automaker sold 787 more of those top models in 2011 and 744 more Cruzes that year.

Ford’s F-150 pickup truck was No. 4 on the top 40, with 55 sold in December and 36 more sold in 2012, compared with 2011.

Taylor Kia, Bob & Chuck Eddy Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Greenwood Chevrolet were December’s leading new-model dealerships, combining to sell 390 vehicles throughout the month.

For new and used sales combined, Greenwood Chevrolet, Taylor Kia and Fred Martin Ford Mercedes topped the list.

Nationally, sales slid in December as well after a particularly strong November, according to the Autodata Corp. In all, though, sales increased 13 percent from 2011, with 2013 figures projected to continue growing slightly.
