Pee Wee Phantoms begin 2013 with victory
The Youngstown Phantoms Peewee AA team started 2013 on a winning note by defeating the Johnstown Warriors 1-0 at the Boardman Ice Zone on Jan. 5.
Both teams shook the rust off after the two-week holiday break. The first two periods were scoreless. At the 7:12 mark of the third period, Justin Beachler took a pass from Alex Ritz, shot at the goalie and scored off his own rebound.
Nick Beck (Boardman) recorded the shutout, facing 24 shots on goal.
On Jan. 6, the Phantoms hosted the Pittsburgh Renegades, who currently sit in second place in the PAHL with the Phantoms holding on to the sixth spot.
The Renegades scored midway through the first period to take a 1-0 lead. But, at 1:16, Robbie Stanko (Canfield) scored the tying goal, with assists from Bo Gray (Boardman) and Devin Whitaker (Boardman).
In the second period, the Phantoms suffered a 30-second collapse. Pittsburgh scored three goals in 27 seconds to take a 4-1 lead. The Renegades held that lead and added to it midway through the third period to record a 5-1 win. Nick Beck (Boardman) was in goal, facing 30 shots.
