Couple accused of burglarizing a home with children in getaway car

A married couple is facing charges after a burglary police say they committed while their children waited in the getaway vehicle.
Jacob M. Burchell, 28, and Nicole M. Burchell, 26, both of Niles, are both charged with one count of burglary.
The husband and wife were apprehended after a caller notified police of a man and woman breaking into home at the 800 block of Lawrence Avenue shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday.
Police said they arrested both Burchells in the home’s kitchen while two “small children” sat in the rear seat of a 2001 Chrysler Sebring parked in the driveway. Police did not release the children’s ages.
According to reports, after he was arrested, Jacob said he “was at the residence to do a plumbing job for a male.”
Police said the female resident returned home and searched the residence for missing belongings. She said a pillowcase was missing. Officers found it in a kitchen wastebasket filled with several pill bottles, cellphone cases, a box of ammunition and a loaded handgun.
Police said all the items belonged to the resident.
Officers said it appeared the female suspect was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The report said the children were released to Nicole’s mother.
While inventorying the Burchells’ vehicle, police found paperwork and addresses for a home on East Prospect Street, the report said. Officers arrived at that home and found a rear glass door shattered. A neighbor told police the homeowner was not there, but a “large aggressive dog” was inside, said police. When the resident arrived, she told officers there was a strong chemical odor that may have been used to incapacitate the dog. Police said the dog appeared to be fine and the resident’s missing items matched items found in the Burchells’ vehicle.
Police also said a relative of Nicole’s reported that his vehicle was broken into, while neighbors witnessed a couple matching the Burchells’ description knocking on doors and windows of that relative’s home on Washington Avenue. Police are investigating the incident.
The couple will appear in Girard Municpal Court for arraignment this morning.
