“City of Angels,SDRq Salem Community Theatre, 490 E. State St., Salem, will have open auditions for the musical comedy “City of Angels” at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 and 21. Set in the glamorous, seductive Hollywood of the 1940s, the show tells the stories of Stine, a novelist attempting to adapt one of his books to the screen, and Stone, his hardboiled gumshoe hero, trying to solve a mystery in the fictional world of the film. Director is Michael Dempsey. All actors, with the exceptions of those playing Stine and Stone, play at least two characters (one in the “real world” and one in the “reel world”). Supporting and ensemble roles most likely will be assigned additional characters, so versatility is a must. All roles are open, and there are nonsinging roles for men. The cast requires six females, seven males and a large ensemble. Be prepared with a one- to two-minute audition song, ideally in the jazzy style of the show or classic Broadway or “American Songbook” standards. No contemporary rock/pop musicals. An accompanist will be provided. You may be asked to read from the script. Men auditioning for non-singing roles can bring a short, prepared monologue, or they will be asked to read from the script. Performances will be April 19-21 and 26-28. For information, call 330-332-9688, or go to salemcommunitytheatre.org.
