3 students join city school board

Three new city high school students have been sworn in as student board members.

Charidan Hilson of the Chaney School Campus, Shannon Sharp from East High School and Nicole Miller of Youngstown Early College were selected by a school-district committee to serve on the board for the remainder of the school year.

“I had the opportunity to sit in on the interviews for these students, and they are excellent students,” Richard Atkinson, school-board president, said at a school-board meeting Tuesday. “They’ll be a good addition to this board.”

Charidan is a junior in Chaney’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics program and plans to be a voice for her peers. She’s involved in the Community Initiative to Reduce Violence, Skills USA and the school yearbook. Her grade point average is 3.32.

Shannon, a senior, participates in Sojourn to the Past, Mahoning Valley Youth Leadership, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the school’s flag line and is a class officer. She carries at 4.2 GPA and is the top-ranked student in her class.

Nicole, a senior, wants to be able to tell other people about the positive things related to her school. Upon graduation, she will be just shy of earning her associate’degree. Her GPA is 3.27.

The board also elected new officers for the new year with Atkinson selected at president and Marcia Haire-Ellis as vice president.
