1918: President Woodrow Wilson outlines his Fourteen Points for lasting peace after World War I.

1963: Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” on loan to the United States from the Louvre Museum in Paris, goes on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., with President John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, in attendance.

2011: U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., is shot and critically wounded when a gunman opens fire as the congresswoman meets with constituents in Tucson; six people are killed, 12 others also injured.


1988: Youngstown Mayor Patrick J. Ungaro makes good on a pledge to appoint a minority as city water commissioner when he names Gary Thornton to the job.

The Austintown Ambulatory Emergency Room at 47 N. Canfield-Niles Road expands to a 24-hour-a-day operation.

1973: Two masked bandits armed with a pistol and a crowbar overpower two men and a woman at the home of George Phillips at 80 Haseltine Ave., tape their hands and feet, ransack the house and escape with more than $8,000.

Dan Koker, a former Youngstowner who is an officer on the Los Angeles Police Department, is honored for saving an 8-year-old girl from drowning. He was on patrol, heard screams, investigated and found the girl struggling in the deep end of a swimming pool.

1963: A veteran Vindicator route salesman, Earl Sloulin, 47, is suffocated when his car falls on him in his Canfield garage while he was working on the transmission of his 1957 Dodge.

U.S. Rep. Michael J. Kirwan of Youngstown ranks 15th in seniority in the House, assuring him of a powerful role in advocating for his district.

1938: David J. Wilkoff, 66, president of Youngstown Steel Car Corp., dies following a heart attack in the Palace Theater. His death follows that of his brother, Samuel, president of the Wilkoff Co., by 18 days.

D.L. Ervin, police chief of Belington, W. Va., reports arresting a hitchhiker who fits the description of a farmhand wanted for questioning in a triple murder at a North Lima farm.
