Jury selection set in Pittsburgh inmate abuse case

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jury selection was scheduled to begin for the key figure charged in a grand jury investigation of inmate abuse at the state prison in Pittsburgh.

Sixty-one-year-old Harry Nicoletti, of Coraopolis has been fired from the prison where he allegedly sexually assaulted and physically abused inmates, mostly those serving time for child molestation. Nicoletti has called the charges “made up” and his attorney says the allegations are based on accusations of inmates looking to get even with guards they don’t like.

Another guard, 41-year-old Tory Kelly, of Aliquippa, was convicted last month of intimidating a witness and otherwise abusing an inmate who reported some of the alleged abuse. Two other guards are scheduled for trial later this year.

The jury picked Tuesday must decide whether Nicoletti is guilty of 89 counts, including sexually assaulting a transsexual inmate.
