County sheriff in Cleveland resigns under pressure

Published: Thu, January 3, 2013 @ 3:00 p.m.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The county sheriff in Cleveland is resigning in a shake-up undertaken by Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald.

Sheriff Bob Reid, who’s stepping down at Fitzgerald’s request, was chosen to replace the elected sheriff who retired in 2009.

FitzGerald kept him in the job, which became an appointed position two years ago in the new county government.

FitzGerald spokeswoman Nicole Dailey Jones said today the resignation was requested as part of an overall review as FitzGerald reaches the midpoint of his four-year term.

Sheriff’s spokesman John O’Brien says Reid isn’t commenting.

Reid earlier served as a Bedford patrolman, police chief and city manager.
