Indians, Brett Myers agree to 1-year deal

CLEVELAND

The Cleveland Indians have agreed to terms with free agent right-hander Brett Myers on a one-year contract.

Myers, who pitched for Houston and the Chicago White Sox last season, will get a chance to win a spot in Cleveland’s starting rotation. His deal with the Indians includes a club option for 2014. It will not be finalized until he passes a physical.

Myers went 3-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 35 relief appearances with the White Sox, who acquired him in a July trade with the Astros. The 32-year-old was 0-4 last season with a 3.52 ERA in 35 games for Houston.

Myers has a 97-93 career record with a 4.20 ERA in 249 starts. He spent eight seasons with Philadelphia before signing as a free agent with Houston in 2010.

MLS stars reaching out to Newtown, Conn.

LOS ANGELES

Houston Dynamo General Manager Chris Canetti, like much of the rest of the country, was horrified by the Dec. 14 massacre at Shady Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that left 20 children and six adults dead.

Unlike much of the rest of the country, he decided to do something about it.

So Canetti, a Connecticut native, got in touch with Eric Da Costa, the Quinnipiac University soccer head coach, and the two of them reached out to youth soccer people they knew in the area, including the Connecticut Football Club youth program.

The result will be on display Jan. 7 when at least 30 Major League Soccer players come together for “Soccer Night in Newtown,” a soccer-themed event open only to Newtown residents.

Nicole H, the 1-5 choice, took the six-furlong Interborough for a third-straight year. Ramon Dominguez rode for trainer Mike Hushion as the 6-year-old improved to 5 for 5 over Aqueduct’s winterized inner track.

Arena Elvira, another 6-year-old, beat R Gypsy Gold by a neck at 3-5 in the four-horse Ladies Handicap.

Jacobsen wins 2nd stage of 4 Hills Tour

GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN, Germany

Anders Jacobsen of Norway edged defending champion Gregor Schlierenzauer of Austria on Tuesday to win his second straight stop of the Four Hills ski jumping tour.

Jacobsen went 143 meters in the second round of jumps to rise from ninth to first. On his first jump, he nearly lost control because of the wind.

Jacobsen leads the tour at the halfway mark before the final two jumps in Austria. He is closing in on his second tour victory after 2007.
