Staff Report

Youngstown

Police said a man attempted to rob two people downtown before he was arrested and pepper-sprayed Tuesday morning.

Christopher Cunningham, 51, of Springdale Avenue, is facing two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of aggravated menacing, intimidation of a witness, resisting arrest and attempted criminal damage.

According to reports, police responded to a call shortly after 9 a.m. from a female victim who had her phone stolen from her by a man at 20 W. Federal St. The call was followed by another victim who said a man matching the same description had punched him in the head and stole his jacket near the Western Reserve Transit Authority on Mahoning Avenue.

Police spotted a man walking along Vindicator Square matching the description the victims gave officers, the report said. After placing Cunningham under arrest he became “highly agitated” and began threatening to kill the police officers.

After repeated attempts to subdue Cunningham, he was pepper sprayed before being transferred to the Mahoning County jail where he is awaiting arraignment.
